Code 5 (Live/Work community based artist residency)

Promoted by East Street Arts and the Goodwin Development Trust with the support of the Arts Council England and Hull City Council Code 5 was a twelve-month live/work artist residency in the Thornton Estate, one of the most deprived areas of Kingston upon Hull. Goodwin wanted to use the arts as a way to engage the residents of the estate and in particular on the subject of climate change. After an initial period of direct and indirect analysis of the area, made through historical research, conversations, group walks, and workshops, I developed a series of projects: The Hot Swap: a micro library in the local not-for-profit grocery shop, Hull Street Games: a series of videos produced with local children, I Wish To Communicate With You: a public light installation for three council blocks, WDYLF: a documentary about the area, the design for Villa Place community garden and The Sea Is Closer Than You Think: Installation and bag design. Project ideas came from conversations with local residents, the designing and making of the work was also done thanks to the participation of local groups, individuals and students from the primary school.
